Advantages and Disadvantages of VV Cables
2025-08-19 01:36:48

Advantages of VV Cables

  1. Cost-Effectiveness
VV cables are relatively inexpensive compared to cables with cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation (such as YJV cables). The use of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) for both insulation and sheathing reduces raw material and production costs, making them a budget-friendly choice for general low-voltage power transmission scenarios.
  2. Simple Manufacturing Process
The production of VV cables involves fewer complex steps compared to XLPE-Insulated Cables, which require high-temperature cross-linking. This simplicity leads to shorter production cycles, easier mass production, and more stable supply in the market.
  3. Good Electrical Insulation
PVC Insulation provides reliable electrical insulation performance under normal operating conditions (rated voltage 0.6/1kV and below). It effectively prevents current leakage and short circuits, ensuring safe power transmission in fixed laying environments like indoor wiring and industrial distribution systems.
  4. Decent Chemical Resistance
The PVC Sheath and insulation exhibit resistance to common chemicals, oils, and some corrosive substances. This makes VV cables suitable for use in general industrial environments where mild chemical exposure may occur, though they are not designed for highly corrosive settings.
  5. Easy Installation and Handling
VV cables have moderate Flexibility (better than single-strand hard wires like BV but less than rubber-Insulated Cables), allowing for relatively straightforward installation in fixed laying scenarios such as buried ducts, cable trays, or wall-mounted conduits. Their structure is simple, with clear core identification, facilitating connection and maintenance.

Disadvantages of VV Cables

  1. Poor Heat Resistance
PVC has a low melting point (around 160-180°C) and begins to soften or decompose at high temperatures. This limits VV cables to operating temperatures of up to 70°C (with short-term overloads allowed up to 105°C for a few hours). They are unsuitable for high-temperature environments (e.g., near boilers, furnaces) or long-term heavy-load operations, as excessive heat can degrade insulation and reduce service life.
  2. Susceptibility to Aging
PVC is prone to aging when exposed to prolonged sunlight, ozone, or high ambient temperatures. Over time, the insulation and sheath may become brittle, crack, or lose flexibility, compromising the cable’s insulation performance and increasing the risk of electrical faults. This makes VV cables less durable in outdoor or harsh environmental conditions compared to UV-resistant or weatherproof cables.
  3. Lower Mechanical Strength
While the PVC sheath offers basic protection, it is less resistant to mechanical impacts, abrasions, or crushing than more robust materials like XLPE or metal-reinforced sheaths. In rough installation environments or areas with potential physical damage (e.g., construction sites), VV cables are more likely to suffer sheath or insulation damage.
  4. Toxic Fumes When Burned
PVC releases toxic gases (such as hydrogen chloride) when burned, which can be harmful to humans and equipment. This limits their use in fire-sensitive areas (e.g., high-rise buildings, public venues) where flame retardancy and low smoke emission are critical. Though flame-retardant variants (ZR-VV) exist, they still do not match the fire safety performance of halogen-free or low-smoke cables.
  5. Limited Current-Carrying Capacity
Due to PVC’s lower heat resistance, VV cables have a lower current-carrying capacity compared to XLPE-insulated cables (e.g., YJV) of the same cross-sectional area. This means they are less efficient for transmitting large currents over long distances or in high-load applications, requiring larger conductor sizes to compensate, which may increase overall costs in such scenarios.
